The White River Valley Middle School boys' soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday evening, falling 1-0 in a tough, defensive contest against a formidable Shoals Middle School team. The Wolverines knew it would be a battle, as the Jug Rox entered the match having shut out their last two opponents. The first half was a tactical showdown. The visiting Jug Rox showcased their defensive prowess, giving the Wolverines little space or time to build an attack. WRV's defense held strong as well, with both teams trading possessions in the midfield early on. The game's only goal came midway through the first half. Capitalizing with a quick counter-attack after a Wolverine defender had pushed upfield, a Shoals attacker found an opening and unleashed a laser-like shot into the top left corner of the net. Despite the setback, the Wolverines battled back, creating several shots on goal before halftime. The Shoals goalkeeper proved to be a difference-maker, making two crucial saves on close-range opportunities to preserve the lead. In the second half, the Wolverines rotated several players into attacking positions, searching for an equalizer. Their best opportunity came on a excellently served corner kick that traveled across the fentirte ace of the goal, but the crashing Wolverine players were just unable to connect. In the final five minutes, WRV pushed a defender forward in an all-out effort to even the score. The relentless pressure created a couple of late chances, but the disciplined Shoals defense held firm to secure their third consecutive shutout. The Wolverines, now 1-1 on the season, will look to bounce back this Friday, August 22nd, when they host Bloomfield. The girls' game will kick off at 5:00 PM, followed by the boys' game at 6:30 PM.
